Industry Partners

The following Media Sandbox Industry Partners will attend the Ideas Lab on 29th November. We would encourage you to use the event to find out more about their technologies. If you would like to develop a proposal with any of the Industry Partners, please make sure you have discussed the idea with them before submission.

HP Labs
HP Labs Bristol’s Mobile Media Systems Lab develops mobile and networked technologies to deliver rich, media services and experiences. Combining expertise in Engineering, Computing, Social Science and Design, the lab seeks to understand how their innovations fit within people’s lives and transform the waypeople experience content as individuals and social groups. A particular focus of the Bristol Lab has been on context and location based mobile experiences in public and urban environments. Some recent projects include mscape, Active Print and the BBC Coast Mobile Experience, winner of several RTS awards and the Queen Square Riot mediascape. HP Labs mscape software allows developers to download, play, develop, test and share your own mediascapes, triggered by location, movement or other sensors.

Ubiquisys

Swindon based Ubiquisys Ltd is the Google-backed pioneer of intelligent 3G femtocell access points for the residential market. Poor indoor coverage and high cost compared to landline connections often prevents mobile customers using cell phone services at home. Ubiquisys’ ZoneGate femtocell is a small device that plugs into a home broadband connection and provides high-quality low-cost 3G coverage for home telephony, Internet and multimedia services.

Low cost, high speed broadband for phones in the home is in itself a building block for pervasive media, but Ubiquisys brings much more to creative software developers. A simple web service lets applications know when the user is at home, immediately giving a context for interaction and the knowledge that coverage and bandwidth are plentiful and inexpensive. Throughout 2008, Ubiquisys will expand the capabilities of this web service to give innovative developers simpler and richer access to mobile phones and other home media devices than ever before.

Ubiquisys is looking for developer partners with fresh ideas for pervasive media applications on multimedia mobile phones. Femtocells will launch commercially later in 2008, but we can make this exciting technology available for Media Sandbox prototyping projects today.
